Programmatic SEO in France

A near-total Google market with the strictest register expectations in Western Europe — vouvoiement, correct accents, and no tolerance for translated-feeling copy.

We build programmatic SEO surfaces for French companies — register-correct copy, Leboncoin and SeLoger-aware positioning, and a publishing engine held to CNIL and RGPD requirements from the first template.

What we do here

One engine, six moving parts — running in France

Programmatic SEO is not a content order. It is a data model, a template system, a performance budget and a maintenance routine that has to keep working after launch. We own all four.

01

Register-correct French, not translated English

Templates are authored in French from the entity model outward, with a formal vouvoiement register by default and a documented style guide per client. Machine-translated scaled content is one of the fastest routes to a Google.fr quality demotion, and we build to avoid it structurally, not by editing after the fact.

02

Leboncoin and SeLoger gap targeting

Leboncoin dominates classifieds intent and SeLoger/Logic-Immo dominate structured property search. We map where their templates go thin — quartier detail, copropriété specifics, DPE explanations — and build the layer they under-serve.

03

Templates with a uniqueness gate

Every template enforces a minimum threshold of genuinely local or product-specific substance before a page is allowed to publish. A page that cannot clear it is held back, not shipped thin, in line with Google's scaled-content abuse policy.

04

RGPD and CNIL-compliant by construction

Consent banners, form logic and data-retention rules are built into the template layer, not bolted onto a WordPress plugin afterwards — including the mentions légales and politique de confidentialité pages French sites are expected to carry.

05

Core Web Vitals on real French mobile networks

Performance budget set against mid-range Android on 4G, matching how most French mobile search actually happens outside the Île-de-France fibre corridor. The build fails past LCP 2.5s / INP 200ms.

06

Index governance, monthly

Coverage reports, cannibalisation checks between .fr and any regional subfolders, pruning of the bottom decile and consolidation of near-duplicate quartier or commune pages.

Suburbs, Buildings, Listings, Agents

Property is the most unforgiving programmatic category there is: inventory changes weekly, every portal already owns the head terms, and a stale page is a wrong page. We build the neighbourhood, building and agent layers portals under-serve, wire them to your live listing feed, and keep the 404/410 discipline that stops decayed inventory from rotting your index.

How we get you ranking

The order we work in for France

No batch of pages goes live before the batch before it has been measured. That sequencing is the reason these surfaces survive core updates.

01

Portail et SERP audit

We document which page types Leboncoin, SeLoger, PagesJaunes and category leaders rank with in France, and where a challenger can realistically win.

02

Modèle de données et arborescence

Clean URL architecture matching French administrative geography — région, département, commune, quartier — so pages match how people actually search.

03

Lot pilote de 50 à 200 pages

A small batch ships first and is measured before scale. If it does not earn impressions in four to six weeks, we change the template, not the volume.

04

Montée en charge sous contrôle

Controlled publishing waves with the uniqueness gate, performance budget and schema validation running on every page.

05

Maillage interne

Région → département → commune hub structure so authority reaches deep pages instead of pooling at the top.

06

Mesure, élagage, rafraîchissement

Monthly review of what ranks, what stalls and what gets cited by AI assistants; stalled pages are rewritten and the dead tail is consolidated.

Market reality

What building at scale in France is actually like

French search is Google to a degree few other large markets match, but that simplicity hides a harder problem: French readers, and French editorial reviewers at the brands you're competing with, spot a translated or under-localised page in one sentence. Wrong register (tu instead of vous on a B2B page), missing accents, or a literal English idiom rendered into French reads as amateur before the reader even evaluates the content.

The second reality is CNIL. France enforces GDPR with its own regulator and its own case history — cookie consent that pre-ticks boxes, or a contact form that stores data without a clear retention statement, is a real legal exposure here, not a theoretical one. Programmatic surfaces that generate thousands of forms or data-capture pages need this built into the template, not patched in afterwards.

Third, France still has an SEO culture built around .fr domains and Google.fr specifically — many French buyers assume, correctly, that a .com is a foreign operator, and will trust a .fr-hosted, VAT-registered, SIRET-numbered business more readily. Programmatic pages that omit these signals lose trust before they lose rankings.

Google holds over 90% of French search across devices; Bing's share is negligible outside a small enterprise segment, so localisation effort belongs entirely in Google.fr behaviour.
AI Overviews and Gemini rolled out later in French than in English, but French-language SGE-style answers now appear on informational and comparison queries, drawing from pages with clean, extractable French rather than paraphrased translations.
Local pack results for services rely heavily on Google Business Profile category accuracy in French — the category taxonomy itself is French-first, and businesses that map imprecisely to it lose local-pack visibility regardless of page quality.
Where it goes wrong

The failure modes we keep finding in France

Scaled pages don't get demoted for being scaled. They get demoted for being interchangeable, slow, or wrong about the place they claim to serve.

Register mismatches

Tu/vous inconsistency across a template set is the single fastest way to read as machine-translated. B2B and regulated content defaults to vous; consumer lifestyle content can go either way but must stay consistent within a template.

CNIL-non-compliant consent

Pre-ticked cookie boxes or vague retention language are an active enforcement target. Programmatic lead-gen surfaces generating thousands of form pages need a compliant consent layer baked into the template.

Machine-translated feel

Literal English syntax translated word-for-word into French — passive constructions, English idiom, wrong gendered agreement — reads instantly as non-native, which French B2B buyers treat as a credibility signal.

.com without French legal signals

Missing SIRET/SIREN, no mentions légales page, or a non-.fr domain reduces trust for transactional and local-service intents specifically.

Accent and typography errors at scale

Missing accents, wrong guillemets, or ASCII apostrophes across thousands of generated pages compound into a visible quality signal a manual reviewer — or a competitor — will screenshot.

Playbook

How we build a France surface

Same order every time. The uniqueness gate and the performance budget come before a single page publishes.

  1. 1
Fix the register before the template

Decide vous vs tu once, in a written style guide, and enforce it in the generation pipeline rather than per-page.

  2. 2
    Human review, not machine output

Machine translation is an acceptable first draft; it is never the shipped copy. A native reviewer passes every template before the first batch.

  3. 3
    Build the CNIL layer in

Consent management, retention statements and a proper mentions légales page as template components, not afterthoughts.

  4. 4
Localise the legal and trust furniture

SIRET/SIREN, VAT number, .fr domain where feasible, and French-format addresses and phone numbers on every page.

  5. 5
Set a uniqueness gate per template

Same discipline as any other market — shingle drafts against the set, block anything above threshold.

  6. 6
    Publish in waves against Google.fr

Watch indexation and impressions in Search Console filtered to France before scaling a batch.

Questions

Programmatic SEO in France — straight answers

Do we need a .fr domain?

Not legally, but for local-services and property intents it measurably increases trust. For B2B SaaS a .com with a proper /fr/ path is fine.

Is machine-translated French acceptable to launch with?

As a first draft only. Publishing it raw is the single most common reason French programmatic surfaces underperform their English sibling.

How strict is CNIL enforcement in practice?

Meaningfully stricter than most EU regulators on consent mechanics specifically. Build compliant consent into the template, not as a plugin afterthought.

Should pricing be shown VAT-inclusive?

For consumer-facing pages, yes — French buyers expect TTC (toutes taxes comprises) pricing by default.

Does regional French (Québécois, Belgian, Swiss) need separate pages?

Only if you have genuine demand and hreflang discipline to support it. Otherwise it's cannibalisation risk for no gain.

Want the France surface scoped before you build it?

We'll audit the data source, size the first batch, set the performance budget and tell you honestly if programmatic is the wrong tool for your category.
