Programmatic SEO in Romania

The largest search market in the Balkans, and one of the few in the EU where Google's dominance is total but diacritics discipline is almost universally absent.

We build programmatic SEO surfaces for Romanian businesses — modelled on the județ/oraș geography and Romanian noun-case inflection, with the Imobiliare.ro/OLX.ro portal landscape and GDPR handling built in from the start.

What we do here

One engine, six moving parts — running in Romania

Programmatic SEO is not a content order. It is a data model, a template system, a performance budget and a maintenance routine that has to keep working after launch. We own all four.

01

Case-aware Romanian keyword modelling

Romanian inflects nouns across five cases and uses diacritics inconsistently in real search queries, so 'apartament în București', 'apartamente București' and 'apartament Bucuresti' need to be modelled as one intent, not three separate keywords.

02

Templates with a uniqueness gate

Every template enforces a minimum-unique-content threshold at publish time — preț, disponibilitate and recenzii layers must carry real local substance or the page is held back, not shipped thin.

03

Imobiliare.ro / OLX.ro gap targeting

Imobiliare.ro and OLX.ro dominate Romanian property and classifieds search. We map where their category and listing templates run thin and build the cartier and comparison layer they under-serve.

04

Performance on real Romanian devices

Budget set against mid-range Android on 4G; LCP under 2.5s and INP under 200ms, enforced as a build-failing CI gate.

05

GDPR-compliant forms and consent

Lead capture, calculators and comparison forms built to GDPR with Romanian-market consent defaults at the template level.

06

Index governance, monthly

Coverage reports, cannibalisation checks across diacritic and inflected .ro duplicates, pruning of the bottom decile and consolidation of near-duplicate oraș pages.

Suburbs, Buildings, Listings, Agents

Property is the most unforgiving programmatic category there is: inventory changes weekly, every portal already owns the head terms, and a stale page is a wrong page. We build the neighbourhood, building and agent layers portals under-serve, wire them to your live listing feed, and keep the 404/410 discipline that stops decayed inventory from rotting your index.

Entity-per-property with a cartier layer

Imobiliare.ro's public surface stacks listing, building, cartier and oraș layers generated from agent feeds, giving Romania's most established property portal a page type for nearly every stage of a search.

  • Listing, building, cartier and oraș layers built from one feed
  • Retired listings handled as a lifecycle event, not left to decay

How we get you ranking

The order we work in for Romania

No batch of pages goes live before the batch before it has been measured. That sequencing is the reason these surfaces survive core updates.

01

Demand and portal audit

We pull Search Console data, the indexed page types of Imobiliare.ro, OLX.ro and category leaders, and the .ro SERP layout per intent, then hand you a written list of winnable page types.

02

Entity model and URL architecture

Clean URLs with județ, oraș and cartier expressed consistently, one canonical page per entity, with diacritic and non-diacritic query variants mapped to the same intent.

03

Pilot batch of 50–200 pages

A small batch ships first and gets measured before scale. If it does not earn impressions within 4–6 weeks we change the template, not the volume.

04

Scale with quality gates

Controlled publishing waves with the uniqueness gate, performance budget and schema validation running on every page.

05

Internal link fabric

Județ → oraș → cartier hubs and contextual cross-links generated from the entity graph.

06

Measure, prune, refresh

Monthly review of what ranks, what stalls and what gets cited by assistants; winners expanded, the tail consolidated.

Market reality

What building at scale in Romania is actually like

Romanian is written with five diacritic characters — ă, â, î, ș, ț — that most keyboards, most legacy CMS exports and most third-party data feeds simply drop or replace with the nearest ASCII look-alike. A programmatic surface that swallows a feed of 'Bucuresti' instead of 'București' and 'Timisoara' instead of 'Timișoara' isn't wrong exactly, since both forms genuinely get searched, but it does read as a machine-built page to anyone who grew up reading the correct form, and it forecloses ranking for the correctly-spelled variant entirely if the canonical URL and title only ever use the stripped one.

The market itself is bigger and more digitally mature than its regional reputation suggests: Romania has one of the fastest average fixed broadband speeds in the EU, a young urban population concentrated in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara, and an e-commerce sector built almost entirely around two domestic platforms — eMAG and OLX.ro — rather than Amazon, which barely operates a local storefront. Any commercial programmatic build here competes with eMAG's own category and comparison pages long before it competes with anything international.

Two operational realities shape the build. First, VAT and invoicing rules under Romanian e-Factura requirements affect what a B2B or e-commerce page can legally claim about pricing, and a template that displays VAT-exclusive prices without the required inclusive figure creates a compliance problem, not just an SEO one. Second, hosting latency to Bucharest from Western European data centres is often the single largest hit to a Core Web Vitals budget on this market — a page that scores well from a Frankfurt test can still miss LCP targets for real users on Romanian mobile networks unless it's served from a Bucharest or at minimum a Frankfurt edge node with genuine CDN presence in South-East Europe.

Google holds close to 98% of Romanian search across devices, making it one of the most single-engine markets in the EU — there is essentially no Bing or Yahoo presence worth planning around.
eMAG and OLX.ro occupy a disproportionate share of commercial-intent SERP real estate for product and classifieds queries, meaning e-commerce and marketplace-style programmatic pages compete with two entrenched domestic giants rather than a foreign platform with weaker local signals.
AI Overview and generative-answer coverage in Romanian lags English-language rollout noticeably in our observed sampling, which currently gives well-structured Romanian-language pages a longer runway before answer-box compression starts eating click-through.
Where it goes wrong

The failure modes we keep finding in Romania

Scaled pages don't get demoted for being scaled. They get demoted for being interchangeable, slow, or wrong about the place they claim to serve.

Diacritics dropped in feeds and slugs

ă, â, î, ș and ț are routinely stripped, replaced with s/t (the old cedilla-vs-comma-below confusion) or mis-transliterated by templates built for Latin-only pipelines, producing URLs and titles that read as obviously non-native to a Romanian speaker.

eMAG and OLX gravity on commercial queries

Product and classifieds-style queries in Romania frequently return eMAG or OLX.ro results in the top three organic positions even for long-tail terms, which means a thin comparison or category page has almost no room to compete without a genuinely differentiated data angle.

VAT-exclusive pricing shown without the inclusive figure

Romanian consumer-protection and e-Factura-adjacent rules expect the VAT-inclusive price to be the one actually shown to consumers; templates ported from B2B markets that default to ex-VAT pricing create both a trust and a compliance problem.

Latency to Bucharest from Western European hosting

Sites hosted purely in Ireland or Western Germany without a South-East European CDN presence routinely show 80-150ms extra TTFB to Romanian users, enough on its own to blow an LCP budget.

Cyrillic-era and pre-1990s naming confusion in older data sources

Some legacy business registries and older content still carry Soviet-era or pre-standardisation place names; a template pulling from an unreviewed historical dataset can surface a name nobody currently searches for.

Playbook

How we build a Romania surface

Same order every time. The uniqueness gate and the performance budget come before a single page publishes.

  1. 1
    Preserve diacritics end-to-end

UTF-8 throughout the pipeline, correct slugification that keeps or deliberately maps ă/â/î/ș/ț rather than dropping them silently, and title tags that use the full correct Romanian spelling — a small technical fix with an outsized native-reader impact.

  2. 2
Find the angle eMAG and OLX don't cover

Comparison, buying-guide and service-locator content that neither marketplace bothers to build well, rather than trying to out-rank their category pages directly on head terms.

  3. 3
    Display VAT-inclusive pricing by default

Set the template's default price field to the VAT-inclusive figure required for consumer-facing pages, with the ex-VAT breakdown as a secondary line for B2B contexts.

  4. 4
Serve from Bucharest or Frankfurt edge with real SEE presence

Verify the CDN provider actually has a South-East European point of presence rather than routing everything through Frankfurt or London by default.

  5. 5
Audit place-name data against current INS county boundaries

Cross-check any historical or third-party dataset against current Institutul Național de Statistică county and locality names before it feeds a template.

  6. 6
Publish in waves against Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara first

These three carry the bulk of commercial search volume; validate the template there before expanding into the smaller-county long tail.

Questions

Programmatic SEO in Romania — straight answers

Do we need to support both the diacritic and stripped spelling of a city name?

The canonical page should use the correct diacritic spelling, but redirect the stripped variant to it — both genuinely get typed, only one should be indexed.

Is Bing worth targeting in Romania?

No. Google's share is high enough that Bing-specific work almost never justifies the time.

Can a small e-commerce brand realistically compete with eMAG?

Not on head category terms directly, but comparison, buying-guide and niche long-tail content that eMAG doesn't bother to build well can genuinely rank.

How important is VAT-inclusive pricing for SEO specifically?

It's primarily a compliance and trust issue, but pages that get flagged or complained about for misleading pricing can also pick up manual review attention, which is worth avoiding entirely.

Does Hungarian-language content matter for Transylvanian cities?

In cities with a large Hungarian-speaking population such as Cluj-Napoca or Târgu Mureș, yes for local-service categories — but it needs a native reviewer, not a translation pass.

Want the Romania surface scoped before you build it?

We'll audit the data source, size the first batch, set the performance budget and tell you honestly if programmatic is the wrong tool for your category.
